Creating swimming pools in 3D

A swimming pool is a critical part of any exterior 3D scene that has one. It is often a key selling point and buying decision in a development or new home. With this in mind we try to create pool scenes that are inviting and in some ways refreshing to the eye.

There are two methods to achieve this; as a flat 2D image applied to the background or as a 360-degree panoramic photograph wrapped around like a drum. The two methods have an effect on the overall price to do the job and specific advantages.

The reduced location and photography costs make simple 2D backgrounds appealing for still Architectural Renderings. But when used in animations a 2D image doesn’t show any motion with the 3D Camera. If a Virtual Reality camera changes viewpoint it will become apparent that the backdrop is merely a flat billboard effect.

The 360-degree panoramic method costs more in location and photography, as each shot is a complete view in all the horizontal directions. This method gives the best result for 3D Animations as when the Virtual Camera turns the view adjusts accordingly.
